The second best job in Britain?

MI5, the UK's domestic intelligence agency, is set to appoint a chief scientific advisor.

Sean_connery_as_bond Apparently, the role will involve "working with intelligence staff to combat terrorism and support counter-intelligence operations". Candidates will need to have world-class scientific expertise and outstanding communication skills.

There are a few people here at Public that could fulfill the second part of that requirement, unfortunately, our world-class scientific expertise needs a little work...

Those with more active imaginations are of the opinion that MI5 are actually on the look out for a real-life Q, the mastermind behind James Bond's life-saving gadgets such the laser beam Rolex and Aston Martin complete with machine guns and ejector seat.

Applications close on 24 April, so you'll have to be quick. Oh, and the best job in Britain, in case you were wondering, well that's '007 of course.

Congratulations!

Opening penguin

Congratulations to the team at Esquires Coffee Houses who opened their 26th store in Doncaster this week.  After two years of working with Esquires it's great to have a store on our doorstep!

Songs to say goodbye

According to a survey carried out by Cooperative Funeral Care, it would appear the songs we choose to say goodbye to are changing.

Bigstockphoto_Piano_And_Sheet_Music_In_The_C_3779001 Fewer people are choosing hymns, down 6%, and plumping for songs that celebrate their loved one's life rather than mourn it.

The current Top Ten funeral songs:

1) My Way - Frank Sinatra/Shirley Bassey
2) Wind Beneath My Wings - Bette Midler/Celine Dion
3) Time To Say Goodbye - Sarah Brightman/Andrea Bocelli
4) Angels - Robbie Williams
5) Over The Rainbow - Eva Cassidy
6) You Raise Me Up - Westlife/Boyzone/Josh Grobin
7) My Heart Will Go On - Celine Dion
8) I Will Always Love You - Whitney Houston
9) You'll Never Walk Alone - Gerry and the Pacemakers
10) Unforgettable - Nat King Cole

Whilst there's no accounting for taste, some of the more unusual choices include AC/DC's Highway to Hell and a schoolteacher who went on her way to Ding Dong the Witch is Dead from The Wizard of Oz - genius!

Happy Easter

Looking for something suitably seasonal, we came across the world's largest Easter egg.Egg

The Belgian chocolate producer Guylian made the chocolate egg with at least 50,000 bars on behalf of the city of St. Niklaas.

The egg measured 8.32 metres high and beats the record of Kwazulu-Natal in South-Africa in 1996. That egg was 7.65 metres high.

Twenty-six craftsman worked altogether 525 hours to build the egg. They needed 1950 kg of chocolates.

Alderman Urbain Vercauteren of the city of St.Niklaas said the egg wasn't meant to be eaten.

He said: "After a week outside in all weather conditions, I don't think it would be very tasteful."

Shame. We could've polished it off in, hum, all of half an hour...

Have you got the bottle?

Debenhams have launched a ladies suit, which apparently wouldn't look out of place in the boardroom, made from 50 recycled plastic bottles.

Bottle suit It comes with the tagline 'any woman can look good wearing rubbish'. Thoughts on a postcard please. In the meantime, we're currently working on a handbag made entirely from our stash of national newspapers.

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies

180px-PrideandPrejudiceandZombiesCover

Hollywood studios are bidding to turn a radical reworking of Austen’s most popular book, now called Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, a parody to be published in April, into a blockbuster movie. More...

Which famous novel would you turn into "monster-lit"?  How about Around the World in Eighty Corpses, Oliver Knife Twist or Werewolfs and Peace? Hmm...maybe not.

A face for radio

Radio-types-John-Humphrys-012

The Guradian ran an interesting piece at the weekend on some of the UK's best (and worst) radio DJs and presenters.  Lots of pretty pictures too, take a look here.

She's back and stronger than ever!

As one of our clients is about to bring back a mascot missing from their brand for some time, and as an agency we have been tasked with making his comeback stronger than ever, it makes you think of other brands that have executed this task successfully. Instantly hopping to mind is Cadbury’s and their relaunch of the Caramel bunny girl, just in time for Easter.

For those of us who are of a certain age it’s hard to look at her without thinking about her sultry speech, originally voiced by Miriam Margolyes. Also her physical development from a Disney-esque cutie to a more curvaceous, pout-laden bunny has allowed her original audience, now all grown up, to reconnect with her as well as appeal to a new generation of chocolate-lovers. It’s interesting to see just how much more iconic and stronger visually she has become by simply taking her out of her former woodland habitat and situating her on the Cadbury’s brand purple colour - much like Fido Dido on a green can, or the McVitie’s Penguin on a bright red pack - the mascot and brand becoming a tour de force in their union.

Then and now - Cadbury's Caramel bunny

Knowing that 'mascot+brand colour=strong branding' opens up the discussion as to whether or not the Fairy baby lost his power the day he stepped out of his green frame and on to a lilac, lemon and powder blue bottle?

Happy 50th Birthday!

The M1 motorway celebrates its 50th birthday this year and we've discovered the changes to road signs that were introduced back in the 6os to ensure passengers travelling at high speeds could read them from a distance.

On this morning's Today programme, Margaret Calvert, one of the designers of the new signs described the amount of thought that went in to the new look. A fascinating insight into an everyday necessity that most of us barely give a second thought to.

Funashushi, a tiger and a flying panda

If you missed last night's 'Fish! A Japanese Obsession' on BBC4, get on the BBC iPlayer and watch it now.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00jdw5k/Fish!_A_Japanese_Obsession

Bluefin-tuna_chris-park
Charles Rangeley Wilson, author, journalist and BBC 2's Accidental Angler, travels to Japan to explore the Japanese people's passionate relationship to fish.

Of all the island nations on Earth, there is, perhaps, none quite so obsessed by fish as Japan. Whether for food or entertainment, fish are at the very core of Japanese identity. From their reverential love of jewel-like koi to the seemingly barbaric world of scientific whaling via the balletic submarine ballet of the drive hunt, there are few corners of Japanese culture that have not been shaped by reference to fish.

Trying to comprehend this 'alien' culture, Charles embarks on a six-week odyssey through Japan, determined to use his love of fish and fishing as the common point of interest between himself and those he meets along the way. Since he loves fish possibly even more than the Japanese, they must have plenty in common...

Watch out for the scientist who, for the last forty years, has toiled tirelessly to farm prized bluefin tuna in a bid to save this highly endangered species and the Funasushi story with Japan's answer to Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall / Jeremy Clarkson / Alan Sugar - priceless!

'Pancake in a bottle' and other utterly missable products

Marketing magazine has embarked on compiling the definitive list of fmcg products that consumers can probably get through life without.

A few of us here have sampled some of the delights of the list with 'pancake in a bottle' proving to be particularly popular - Ian will be attempting to purchase some at lunch. Dairylea Dunkers are one of our favourites - for our PR folks, in fact, anything which involves cheese is always bound to please...

Minimalistic movie madness

Darren previously worked with a copywriter who devised the '3 by 3 Movie Quiz'. This was based on the principle that when writing headlines or writing for ads, the 'less is more approach' is often the best. The objective is simple, take a well-known movie and then summarise the entire plot in just 3 sentences each consisting of only 3 words. So, as an exercise to stimulate some creative grey matter Darren opened this challenge to the entire agency.  Here's the pick of the crop:

Lord of the Rings
Ring is lost.
Midget climbs mountain.
Ring is destroyed.

The Shining
Stuck in hotel.
Dad goes mad.
Shit. Here's Johnny.

The Exorcist
Cute little girl.
Head starts spinning.
Call the Priest.

Jaws
Shark terrorises island.
Operation "Kill Shark"
Need bigger boat

2001 - A space Odyssey
Monkey throws bone.
Evil red eye.
Crazy trippy voyage.

Thinking inside the box

Picture 1

Spotted by our MD, this simple yet revolutionary idea for packaging water has been the buzz of the creative department today.

Not only does it demonstrate a forward-thinking approach to displaying mineral water but is eco-friendly in principal too - 90% of the Boxed Water container is made from renewable resources, from ethically managed forests, and, because of the shape of the packaging it can be shipped flat to the water plant. Also when transporting to store more boxes than bottles can fit in a truck and therefore has less carbon expenditure - genius!

Marketing Live

Chris attended Marketing Live in Leeds yesterday.
